Using the HTML Editor in Desire2Learn

  • When you type text in Desire2Learn (D2L), you are working with the integrated HTML Editor, which is used in tools such as Course Content, Discussions, Dropbox, and Quizzes.

    This editor offers both basic and advanced formatting options. In addition to formatting options, the Advanced tab in the editor allows you to insert pictures, Quicklinks, and objects such as audio files.

    This document includes the following sections:

    Using the HTML Editor

    1. Begin by typing the desired text into the text area.
      Note: To have the HTML Editor appear in fullscreen click Toggle Fullscreen Mode.
    2. To apply basic formatting to your text use the toolbar buttons across the top of the editor.
    3. To apply advanced formatting to your text, select the Advanced tab.

    Insert Stuff Tool

    This tool enables you to insert audio and video files, as well as flash animation. The following image displays the Insert Stuff window:

    From the menu along the left, you can choose:

    • My Computer - allows the user to upload an object from their computer to insert into the text area
    • Course Offering Files - allows the user to insert an object that is already saved to the course files
    • Enter a URL - enables the user to link to an object from the web
    • Enter Embed Code - enables the user to use an embed code to insert an object from the web

    Insert a Quicklink

    This tool enables you to create Quicklinks to external sites or other areas of your course site, such as quizzes, discussions, dropboxes, etc. The following image displays the Insert Quicklinks window:

    To insert an external link:

    1. Select URL from the Category drop-down menu.
    2. Copy the URL from the selected webpage.
    3. Paste the URL into the URL box under the Link Details section.
    4. Type a display name for the link into the Link Caption box under the Link Options section.
    5. Under the Link Options section, the user can also choose to open the link in a whole window, the same frame, or a new window by selecting the radio button next to the desired option.
    6. Select Insert in the bottom right corner of the window.

    To insert a Quicklink:

    1. Select a category from the Category drop-down menu according to where the resource is located within your course (i.e. Content, Course File, Discussions, Quizzes, etc.).
    2. Under the Link Details section, select the actual resource that you would like to link to from that particular category (i.e. Assignment 1, Discussion 3, etc.).
    3. Type a display name for the Quicklink into the Link Caption box under the Link Options section.
    4. Under the Link Options section, you can also choose to open the link in a whole window, the same frame, or a new window by selecting the radio button next to the desired option.
    5. Select Insert in the bottom right corner of the window.
