Using Turnitin with the D2L Assignments

  • Using Turnitin's Originality Checking enables you to monitor your dropbox folders and review submitted material for originality of content. The integration compares submissions to online databases, web pages, and papers previously submitted to the Turnitin database. The originality report displays highlighted key areas, shows  a breakdown of matching sources, and provides direct links to the matching content. The file types that are compatible with Originality Checking include; MS Word, WordPerfect, PostScript, Acrobat PDF, HTML, RTF, and Plain text.

    Creating Assignments Folder for Originality Checking

    1. You initialize the originality checking as you create a new assignment folder. In the Originality Checking section there is a check box labeled Enable for this folder. You must check the box in order to have the ability to have submitted material reviewed by Originality Checking.
      Important Note: You cannot disable Originality Checking once it has been enabled for a dropbox folder.
    2. Continue to fill in the other items desired for the assignment. When you have initialized Originality Checking, it enables additional options at the bottom of the New/Edit Folder page. These options give you the opportunity to enable detailed Originality Reports for assignment submissions.
      Setting Turnitin Advanced Properties
      • Display: In this section you can determine if you would like your students to see the Originality Report for their submitted work by checking the box next to Allow submitters to see Originality Reports.
      • Frequency: You can have material automatically checked on all submissions by selecting Automatic originality checking on all submissions, or you can submit them individually by selecting Identify individual submissions for originality checking. Choosing the second option will require you to manually submit for Originality Checking. This, however, can be useful if you do not want to check all submissions, but still have the ability to do so on a case-by-case basis.
      • Check Submissions Against: You can specify the databases against which the submitted material is checked, user paper database, current and archived Internet, and periodicals, journals, and publications which have partnered with Turnitin.
      • Index Files for Originality Checking:  You can allow other files to be checked against submissions by selecting the box next to Allow other files to be check against submissions. When you have made all of your selections, click on the Save and Close button to complete the process.
    3. Selecting Save and New will enable you to create another Dropbox folder, and Save simply records the selections you have made.

    Reviewing Originality Reports

    Originality reports can be reviewed from the Folder Submissions for the assignment. Once a student has submitted a file to the dropbox, the Folder Submissions area will show it as In-Progress.

    Report Inprogress

    The time it takes for the Originality Report to complete varies. It can be 15 minutes or longer depending on how many files have been submitted to Turnitin for the assignment as well as by their other clients. When the report is completed, the In-Progress changes to a percentage rating with a color code next to it. To see the full Originality Report, click on the color code next to the percentage.

    Report has completed

    A lower percentage rating indicates that the content is likely original and has not been copied; a higher percentage rating indicates the content is likely not original and has been copied from another source.

    The percentage ranges are associated with colors:

    • Blue >= 0 and < 20%
    • Green >= 20 and < 40%
    • Yellow >= 40 and < 60%
    • Orange >= 60 and < 80%
    • Red >= 80 and <= 100%

    The Originality Report is comprised of two panes. The right pane lists all of the matching sources, including the percentage of text that matches and a link to the online content. The left pane displays the submission text using colored highlights to draw attention to the matching content.
