Copyright Basics: Wading Through the Mud

  • “If I want to show a video in my classroom, do I need to worry about copyright?” “I purchased the movie Pacific Rim and I am concerned if I can use it in my online course.” “I do not need to worry about what images I use, I just search for what I want on Google and I download them.”

Copyright, what is it? It is about as clear as mud! Attendees at this workshop will gain a basic understanding of Fair Use, Digital, Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998 and the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization (TEACH) Act. Use of checklists help keep participants on track with copyright principles. A brief review will be provided of Creative Commons, Open Educational Resources, requesting copyright permission, and linking content in the LMSs.
