IUP Trustees Recognize Larry Sobotka for Support of Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center

IUP’s Council of Trustees approved the naming of the IUP Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center as the Larry F. Sobotka Science Discovery and Outdoor Learning Center. Sobotka, a 1963 education graduate of IUP, made a $150,000 gift in support of the Center. In addition, Mr. Sobotka has designated these funds to receive a portion of his estate through an irrevocable testamentary pledge valued at upwards of $1 million.

University Family Drive—Join Our Students in Supporting IUP

Students from each class were issued a big challenge this year by Terry Serafini ’61 to give back to IUP. He generously offered to triple the impact of every student gift of $5 or more made in support of the IUP Food Pantry (up to $25,000) as long as 100 freshmen, 100 sophomores, 100 juniors, and 100 seniors make a gift! They are rising to meet the challenge and have captured over $14,000 toward Serafini’s $25,000 match pool. And the year isn’t over yet.

New IUP Science Facility to be Named in Honor of Alumni Couple

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees approved the naming of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the future facility for the sciences in honor of alumni Dr. John and Char Kopchick.

Donna and Terry Griffith Establish Endowed Scholarship at IUP

The Terry K. and Donna M. Griffith Endowed Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students who are enrolled full-time and who are pursuing a degree offered by either the Department of Counseling or the Department of Communications Media. For Communications Media students, preference will be given to those involved with the Center for Media Production and Research.

Noted Mathemagician Art Benjamin to Visit IUP as Inaugural Serafini Lecturer

Arthur Benjamin, the Smallwood Family Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and a magician, will share his “mathemagic” with the IUP community on October 18 and 19. All of his presentations are free and open to the community.

Scholarship Established for IUP Students from Northumberland County

Both formerly of Northumberland County, Joseph and Susan Kovaleski have established a scholarship to benefit Northumberland County students who are pursuing a degree in education or an education-related field and who are enrolled in the College of Education and Communications.

IUP Names Planetarium, Atrium of Science Building in Honor of Alumni Couple

Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Council of Trustees honored Tim and Debra Phillips Cejka, 1973 graduates of IUP, with a resolution to name the IUP planetarium and its atrium as the Cejka Planetarium. The resolution was approved by the Council at its May 10 meeting.

IUP Announces Imagine Unlimited Campaign; Major Commitments Announced at Celebration

During its annual Celebration of Philanthropy on Friday night, Indiana University of Pennsylvania announced it has increased its comprehensive fundraising campaign goal to $75 million at the same time it announced two multimillion-dollar gifts from alumni with local ties. Called Imagine Unlimited, the campaign originally was expected to reach $40 million, but according to campaign cochair William Madia, an IUP alumnus from Montara, Calif., the generosity of alumni and friends has exceeded expectations.
