The College of Humanities and Social Sciences challenges students to understand their responsibilities to a global and changing world and provides opportunities for developing the habits of mind, the character, the values, and the commitment needed to make the world a better place. The college contributes substantially to the overall intellectual growth of IUP students and transforms lives by supporting an awareness and an appreciation of our diverse cultural heritage, values, and aspirations and by emphasizing a broad knowledge base that is essential for professional expertise. Our curriculum promotes critical and interdisciplinary thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity, as well as an interest in ethical civic engagement—that is, it fosters an intellectual and social involvement that is central to the academic and professional qualification of the citizens of our times.
To secure a rich educational environment for its students, the college expects its faculty members to engage in scholarly work that complements their classroom activities. The college is committed to a culture of advanced applied research shared by both faculty members and students. Thus, it fosters an atmosphere of collaborative academic research that enables faculty members and students to partake in the intellectual life of their disciplines and contribute to the well-being of their communities and regions. The college is home to undergraduate and graduate programs in academic disciplines represented by these eleven departments: Anthropology, Economics, English, Foreign Languages, Geography and Regional Planning, History, Journalism, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies, and Sociology.

They emphasize the knowledge and skills areas of their chosen fields and provide access to the latest research technologies, methodologies, and findings. They promote an understanding of contemporary career options for college graduates and the qualities students need to achieve their career and life goals. To this end, college departments support undergraduate and graduate disciplinary specialization that promotes effective communication skills, technological know-how, applied research, and information literacy.
