Geoscience Seminar: “Electricity Transitions in the USA”

Weyandt Hall, Rm. 006

Geoscience students and those interested in geoscience are welcome to attend Dr. Destenie Nock’s talk. Nock is an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering, and in engineering and public policy (at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research is focused on applying optimization and decision analysis tools to evaluate the sustainability and reliability of the electricity grid in disparate energy systems.  Specifically, she uses mathematics to answer questions like “how can we make power systems more sustainable and equitable?”

Geoscience Seminar: “Energy, Climate, and Geoscience”

Weyandt Hall, Rm. 006

Geoscience students and those interested in geoscience are welcome to attend Dr. Fred Zelt’s talk.

Zelt’s first geology class was at Bethel Park High School south of Pittsburgh. This was followed by undergraduate work at MIT, a dissertation on marine shale sedimentology and stratigraphy at Princeton, and 30 years as a geologist and manager with ExxonMobil in Houston, Norway, London, and New Orleans. Accomplishments include geologic evaluation of the $1.7B ExxonMobil acquisition of shale gas assets of the Indiana, Pa.-centered Phillips companies in 2011. A certified league cycling instructor, Zelt leads geology-and-cycling excursions; speaks publicly about geology, climate, and energy; and plans to develop a 2021 STEM and Cycling summer camp for grade 8-12 students. In 2020, Zelt plans to pedal 11,400 miles around the perimeter of the US with four Bike the US for MS groups. Zelt and his wife of 38 years, also a Bethel Park native, have four children and three grandchildren.
