I received bachelor's degrees in Regional Planning and Geography in 1997. At IUP, through close interaction with professors and geography staff, I was given many opportunities to gain valuable work experience prior to ever graduating. The first opportunity was working for Spatial Science Research Center. This grant funded GIS operation allowed students to learn GIS skills in a work environment. My second opportunity came when a professor presented me with the opportunity to complete an internship at the City of Altoona in their planning department. These combined experiences allow me to graduate with more than a year of work experience on my resume.
After graduating from IUP, the internship at Altoona turned into a full-time position. In my two and a half years at Altoona, I was the lead GIS developer and was able to be part of many projects, including a comprehensive plan. In August of 1999, I accepted a position as GIS manager for Cranberry Township. As GIS manager I was responsible for managing the direction and growth of the GIS system. In 2002, I was promoted to database applications manager and took on the responsibility of managing most IT projects.
