The Daniel and Diane Griffith Geography and Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to talented and deserving students interested in a geography major with a minor or a second major in mathematics.

Daniel Griffith is the Ashbel Smith professor and a faculty member in the School of Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences at the University of Texas-Dallas. He attended IUP from 1966 to 1972, earning a BSEd in Mathematics Education with a minor in geography and an MA in Geography. He subsequently earned an MS in Statistics from Penn State and a PhD in Geography at the University of Toronto.

This scholarship hopes to encourage students and afford the opportunity to pursue a dynamic, if not unconventional, program of study in both geography and mathematics. The combination prepares students for careers such as academia, demographics, logistics, site selection, spatial analysis, transportation planning, and more.

Successful applicants for the scholarship must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at IUP
  • Must be in academic good standing
  • Must be willing to declare an academic course of study as a dual geography-mathematics major, a geography major with a mathematics minor, or a mathematics major with a geography minor

Selection is made cooperatively by the Geography, Geology, Environment, and Planning and the Mathematics departments. It is based on cumulative GPA, GPA in relevant fields, a statement of interest, and recommendations. For further information, contact the chair of Geography, Geology, Environment, and Planning, jbenhart@iup.edu.
