Smith-Sherwood continues to pursue this line of research, along with Mark Darhower of North Carolina State University. 

Smith-Sherwood and Darhower have also co-authored a chapter in The Integrated Performance Assessment Twenty Years and Counting, which will be published by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in 2023. Additionally, they presented their findings as well as a workshop on using the Integrated Performance Assessment in second language literature courses at the 104th annual conference of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, July 9–12, 2022.
