This program will be presented by Marveta Ryan-Sams of the Department of Foreign Languages. In summer 2021, massive popular protests erupted in Cuba and in Cuban communities in other countries. Such open expression of frustration with the policies of the Cuban government had not been seen in decades.
One song—"Patria y vida"—by a group of Afro-Cuban musicians became the theme and chant of the protests. This presentation will explain the context and significance of the protests, the song, and its artists.
