Residency Requirements for the Literature and Criticism, PhD Program

  • The Residency Requirement may be satisfied in either of two ways:

    1. Academic Year or Semester-Plus-Summer: This requirement may be fulfilled by enrolling for a minimum of nine credits for each of two consecutive semesters, or for one semester and a summer, provided there is no interruption.
    2. Summers Only: This requirement may be fulfilled by enrolling for a minimum of nine credits for each of two consecutive summers and six credit hours during the intervening academic year, or by enrolling for twelve credits during each of two consecutive summers.

Please note: The School of Graduate Studies and Research has a Final Credits Policy: All degree candidates must complete their program's final six credits of graduate work in courses offered by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Under unique circumstances, appropriate substitutions may be authorized by petitioning the Graduate School dean after obtaining departmental approval. Independent study within the program is acceptable.

The summers-only option for fulfilling the residency requirement is our commitment to serving professionals who are employed. This commitment means that course offerings are arranged to accommodate teaching schedules of secondary, as well as two-year and four-year college teachers. With this flexibility of scheduling, graduate students can pursue their studies without interrupting their careers, or they can take advantage of sabbaticals for concentrated and rapid progress toward the degree.
