YouTube or itube?

  • In January 2014, IUP introduced the itube streaming video service.

itube is not a replacement for our YouTube EDU Partner channel.

    1. YouTube remains the best place to post videos for which you want a wide audience. (Our most popular video, with over 500,000 views, was created by a faculty member.)
    2. itube is most appropriate for videos that should not be viewed off campus or by students outside of a certain course.

Here’s a quick comparison of the two platforms:

      itube YouTube
How widely are videos seen? On or off campus. (Almost) worldwide. As the world’s largest video viewing site, YouTube is the best place to get a large audience for your video.
Can viewership be limited? Yes, many options. In practical terms, no.
Limit on length of video? No. No.
Works on Desire2Learn and Moodle? Yes, you can upload and insert video and audio files from both learning management systems. Yes, you can use YouTube’s embedding code to put videos where you need them.
Can videos be embedded on your site? Yes. Yes.
Works on mobile? Yes. Works easily with almost all mobile devices.
Accessible to the visually and hearing impaired? Incorporate a video player that complies with Section 508 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act. Subtitles are easy to create from a transcript. Does not support descriptive audio for the visually impaired.
Ownership You retain all ownership rights in your user-submitted media. You retain all ownership rights, but grant YouTube “a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform” your video. See the YouTube Terms of Service for complete information.

If you’d like a video added to IUP’s YouTube channel, file an ihelp ticket. If you'd like to add a video to itube, consult the IT Support Center’s ihelp documentation.
