Add a YouTube Video to a Page or News Post

  • If you have a video that is on YouTube, you can easily embed that video into a page on your site or into a news post.

    This is accomplished through a SmartForm available in the CMS. To create a page or news post with a video embedded, you will need the URL from Youtube, plus the content for the webpage or news.

    Create a Page with a YouTube Video Embedded

    1. To create a page with a video, first go to your Workarea.
    2. At the top of the Workarea, click Content. Content tab
    3. On the left side of your Workarea, find your website within the Unit folders.
    4. YouTube Video smartformClick on the folder that contains the section of your site in which you want to create the new page. Hover over New in the menu bar. In the pulldown menu, mouse over SmartForms. In that list, click YouTube Video to select the form.
      • If YouTube Video is not a Smart Form option, contact the Digital Team and request that it be activated for that folder: web-team@iup.edu.
    5. When the form opens, give the content a title.
    6. You will need the URL from YouTube. To get the URL:
      • Open a browser window and go to the video on YouTube. Below the video, click the Share button. In the area that appears below, copy the URL that YouTube provides (will be in this format: http://youtu.be/EuDVD25NJBw).
    7. Paste the URL into the Video URL field of the form.
    8. The width and height can be left to the default values, as the video will responsive in the CMS.
    9. The Page Content field is optional. It can be formatted like any other content. You can include text, photos, links, and more. (Note: This content will be positioned underneath the video on the webpage.)
    10. Submit the content for publishing as you would any other content.
    11. Place the content block into your page layout.

    Create a News Post with a YouTube Video Embedded

    The process for creating a news post with an embedded video is the same as embedding a video in a page, only you are creating a news post in the news area.

    1. To post news, first go to your Workarea.
    2. At the top of the Workarea, click Content. Content tab
    3. On the left side of your Workarea, find your unit website and find your News folder. Beneath your News folder, you will see what appears to be a subfolder, indicated with a Blog icon and labeled with your unit’s name, followed by “News.” See “Digital Team News” in the sample below: News folder
    4. HTML news post with videoOn the right side of your Workarea, hover over New on the toolbar, and on the pull-down menu, mouse over SmartForm. Then select HTML Post with Video.
    5. Give the post a title. This is what will appear as the headline for the news item.
    6. Enter the Video URL from YouTube. To get the URL:
      • Open a browser window and go to the video on YouTube. Below the video, click the Share button. In the area that appears below, copy the URL that YouTube provides (will be in this format: http://youtu.be/EuDVD25NJBw).
    7. Enter the content of the post, as you would for any content item.
    8. Under the Summary tab, enter a short description of the post. Check the appropriate box under Subjects. If the categories provided do not suit your typical news posts, please contact the Digital Team to have different categories added.
    9. When finished, submit the post for publishing, as you would any other content item.
