Your website is the central source of information on your majors and graduate programs. If there is something potential or current students need to know about your program, make sure it is there.
That isn’t to say that other materials (such as brochures or viewbooks) don’t have their place. But we only get to send those out once a potential student has contacted us.
And even then, many of our printed materials include the phrase “For more information, see our website.” How does your program look if your website just repeats the same content as your brochure? Or if it actually has less content than your brochure?
So—what does your content about your major or program need to do? Here’s a start:
Show what’s unique about your major or program. That might mean explaining what makes it unique at IUP or what makes it unique among similar programs at other schools. Keep in mind that what seems perfectly obvious about your program may not be so obvious to many of our audiences. Was yours the first program in the nation? Do you have a planetarium? A special interest floor in the Suites? Let visitors know.
Answer the questions potential (and current) students are likely to have. Get the basics out there. Are there requirements to get in? What courses will they take, who teaches them, and what are those courses like? Are any student clubs or organizations associated with this program? Not sure what to include? Ask your students what they wanted to know, or wish they knew, before joining your program. (See also Appendix: Ideas for Website Content.)
Use clear calls to action. What do you want your visitors to do? Sometimes, simply reading or viewing the content might be enough, but more often you want them to apply to your program, declare your major, or just get in touch with you. Make the next step obvious.
