The Madia Department of Chemistry and West Virginia University's C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry have signed a formal memorandum of understanding to facilitate the admission of any qualified IUP chemistry and biochemistry graduate into the PhD in Chemistry program at WVU.

Benefits

  1. Admission to WVU's PhD program in chemistry provides students with an in-depth study of issues and advancements in the fields of analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry and many other interdisciplinary fields.

  2. The purpose of this agreement is to attract qualified students to both institutions who wish to pursue a PhD in chemistry, which will prepare graduates for successful careers in industry, government, or nonprofit agencies.

Requirements and Terms

Acceptance into WVU's C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry's PhD program is based on a merit model with the student achieving or completing base entrance requirements of said program, including other indicators that identify strong PhD candidates in past doctoral cohorts.

  1. Students must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above at the time of application to the graduate program, and maintain an overall GPA of 3.0 or above at the time of completion and graduation from IUP in biochemistry; chemistry; chemistry/interdisciplinary chemistry; chemistry/pre-medical; chemistry/pre-pharmacy; or chemistry education.

  2. Students must receive a minimum grade of "C" or better on all required courses for their degree in biochemistry; chemistry; chemistry/interdisciplinary chemistry; chemistry/pre-medical; chemistry/pre-pharmacy; or chemistry education.

  3. Students must take and receive a minimum grade of "C" or better in Advanced Physical Chemistry; Physical Chemistry I Lab or Biochemistry I Lab; and the Advanced Chemistry Lab (covering advanced analytical, advanced inorganic, and advanced physical chemistry topics).

  4. Students must take the general GRE. The chemistry subject GRE is not required.

  5. Students must actively participate in undergraduate research for two 14-week academic semesters (10 hrs per week); two 10-week summers (15 hrs per week); or one 14-week academic semester and one 10-week summer. The level of activity will be documented in IUP faculty letters of recommendation.
