Mr. Lewis graduated from IUP with a degree in Business Management. It was at IUP that he met his wife, Sue, who has an Elementary Education degree. They have lived in Indiana since graduating in 1970, and have raised three children.

After working in public accounting for two years, Walt assumed the position of director of the Accounting Office at IUP in 1972. In 1978, he ventured back into the field of public accounting when he opened the Indiana office of McClure & Wolf, a CPA firm based in Uniontown, Pa. Ten years later, he cofounded Smith, Lewis, Chess & Company, LLP, a CPA firm with offices in Indiana and Uniontown. He has managed the Indiana office since then.

Mr. Lewis continues to have strong ties with the university. Three of the firm's partners have degrees from IUP as well as six of his employees. Mr. Lewis is the recipient of IUP's Distinguished Alumni Award. In addition, he received the Accounting Alumni Award from IUP's Department of Accounting and is a recipient of the Bell Ringer Award.
