Arboretum Facts

    • The largest tree in the Oak Grove is a White Oak that is 11 feet 4 inches in diameter, 41 inches wide, and approximately 140 feet tall.
    • Based on a study in 1961, there were 149 trees in the Oak Grove. Today there are 90. There were 32 species of trees in the Oak Grove. Today there are 16 species.
    • There are numerous specimens of Eastern Hemlock (the Pennsylvania state tree) on campus. There are no specimens of Mountain Laurel (the state flower) on campus.
    • The mixed Oak forest is the most common habitat in Pennsylvania. It is also commonly known as the Oak/Hickory forest of Eastern North America.
