On November 13 and 14, a cross-disciplinary team of IUP student researchers participated in the 20th annual Appalachian Teaching Project virtual symposium, a regional economic development conference sponsored by the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Anthropologist Publishes on Maritime Archaeology in Global Archaeology Handbook

Ben Ford, Anthropology, recently published a chapter on Maritime Archaeology in The Routledge Handbook of Global Archaeology.

Adams Participates in Diversity Forum

Anthropology professor Abigail Adams was an invited speaker at the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering Diversity Forum, held virtually on October 13, 2020. Adams presented on implicit bias, critically compassionate intellectualism, and social justice and equity within higher education.

Anthropologist Poole Presents Paper at International Conference on Refugee Education

Anthropology professor Amanda Poole presented “Teleological Violence: Disjuncture between Refugee Aspirations and Structural Constraints on Progress among Eritrean Refugees in Ethiopia” at the ReBuild (Refugee Education: Building Durable Futures) Conference, hosted by the Peace Research Institute Oslo.

Anthropology Faculty “Is Race Real?” Panel Discussion Recording Available

More than 100 students, faculty, staff, and community members attended the October 7 “Is Race Real?” panel discussion with IUP anthropology faculty members Abigail Adams, a medical anthropologist; Ben Ford, an archaeologist; and Andrea Palmiotto, a forensic anthropologist.

Anthropology Faculty Assists with National Accreditation of Forensic Laboratories

Andrea Palmiotto worked with a team of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board technical assessors to review the forensic science procedures and standards used at the the FBI Forensic Laboratory. The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board provides accreditation services that adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization.

Ben Ford (Anthropology), Jessi Halligan (Florida State University), and Alexis Catsambis (US Naval History and Heritage Command) recently published Our Blue Planet, a first-of-its-kind maritime and underwater archaeology textbook.

Anthropology Department Receives Grant to Expand Photogrammetry Capabilities

Professor Ben Ford was recently awarded an IUP Academic Computing Policy Advisory Committee Innovation Grant to purchase photogrammetry software and hardware. Photogrammetry is the construction of three-dimensional digital models from digital photographs.

Francis Allard has been appointed editor-in-chief of the journal Asian Perspectives: The Journal of Archaeology for Asia and the Pacific.

Zaakiyah Cua, an applied archaeology graduate student, is the winner of an IUP Graduate Student Outstanding Research Award for her thesis, titled “Loyalhanna Creek: A Geoarchaeological Approach to Understanding the Archaeological Potential of Floodplains.”

Anthropology Faculty and Students Publish Archaeology Laboratory Manual

Lara Homsey-Messer of the Anthropology Department recently authored a laboratory manual titled Experiencing Archaeology: a Laboratory Manual of Classroom Activities, Demonstrations, and Minilabs for Introductory Archaeology. Several IUP graduate students in the Applied Archaeology MA program and undergraduates in the Archaeology BA program contributed chapters and original artwork to the book.

Anthropology Faculty and Alumni Present at Conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology

Ben Ford and William Chadwick presented papers at the 53rd annual conference on Historical and Underwater Archaeology held in Boston, January 8–11, 2020. Several alumni of the Anthropology Department and the Applied Archaeology MA Program also presented at the conference.
