ETHEL with Robert Mirabal

Gorell Recital Hall, Second Floor Sutton Hall

This event is over.

Continuing a successful collaboration inspired by ceremonies dedicated to the Sun, the New York-based ETHEL quartet and the Native American musician, instrument builder, and three-time Grammy Award winning Robert Mirabal will present The River, a cross-cultural concert experience.

Inspired by Water as the embodiment of Spirit and its essential role in Life on Earth, The River will immerse the audience in a flow of music, narrative, and ritual that evokes timeless Native American traditions through contemporary musical artistry. As delivered by these master performers, the effect is fine creative music borne out of diverse cultural influences, artistic experimentation, and mutual respect.

Born and raised in Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, and influenced by the traditional music of Taos, Robert Mirabal began playing the flute at the age of 18. By studying music from West Africa and Haiti, Japanese Taiko drumming, Celtic music, rock, and hip-hop, Mirabal began to create his own blend of traditional and popular music. He is a three-time Grammy winning musician, composer, master craftsman, poet, actor, and screenwriter, and, through it all, he has stayed true to his Pueblo roots. His performances always maintain the purpose of honoring the land, his family, his ancestors, and his tribe.

At the heart of ETHEL, the acclaimed New York City-based contemporary music quartet, is a collaborative ethos—a quest for a common creative expression that is forged in the celebration of community. Nearly 20 years into its existence, the group conceives, commissions, produces, and performs rich multimedia concert works and has released several acclaimed albums.
