Take Back the Night Table

Stapleton Library

In many situations, violence occurs at night, and, as a result, many women stay home out of fear. Every spring, the Haven Project coordinates its largest event with a gathering of several hundred people, including students, staff, faculty, and Indiana residents to take back the night! Visit the Haven Project table to learn more information about this amazing event on IUP campus.

Come and enjoy a talk by Nico Slate on his book Gandhi's Shadow: The Struggle to End Poverty in Rural India which focuses on sustainability efforts/issues and female empowerment. The talk should last for just under an hour, with time for Q and A. Light refreshments to follow in the lobby area outside HSS 225.


Nico Slate (Ph.D., Harvard, 2009) is Associate Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University. He is also director of the Bajaj Rural Development Lab and the Social Change Semester.

His first book is Colored Cosmopolitanism: The Shared Struggle for Freedom in the United States and India (Harvard University Press, 2012)
His second book is The Prism of Race: W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, Paul Robeson and the Colored World of Cedric Dover (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).
He also edited Black Power Beyond Borders (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013).
