Gary Wigand ’95

Alumni Chef Gary Wigand

Executive Chef
Whistling Straits Golf Course

Kohler, Wisconsin

For more than ten years, Chef Gary Wigand has created exquisite cuisine at Destination KOHLER in the charming Village of Kohler, less than an hour north of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Leaving his roots in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chef Wigand moved to the Midwest after graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts in 1995. Starting at the Immigrant Restaurant & Winery and later moving to the Wisconsin Room, both at the American Club (the Midwest’s only AAA Five Diamond Resort Hotel), Chef Wigand joined the kitchen staff at Whistling Straits golf course in 1998 serving as head chef. He currently oversees food operations for the Whistling Straits Restaurant as well as the outside terrace, Irish pub, banquet facility, and the food and beverage offerings on two of the resort’s golf courses.

Whistling Straits, site of the 2004 PGA Championship, the 2007 U.S. Senior Open, and scheduled to host the 2010 and 2015 PGA Championships and the 2020 Ryder Cup, is a world-ranked golf course. Whistling Straits Restaurant offers outstanding breakfast, lunch, and dinner cuisine with a British Isles influence. Whistling Straits won the Three Diamond Award from AAA in 2008 and also received the 2008 Wine Spectator magazine’s Award of Excellence.

Chef Wigand was honored to return to IUP in August 2006 to speak at the Academy of Culinary Arts Toque Ceremony. Chef has been married for ten years and has two “wonderful” kids.

My career thus far has been very good and I owe a great deal of that to the instructors at IUP. In 2006 I was invited to cook at the James Beard House in NYC. That was quite the experience that I will not soon forget.
