College of Humanities and Social Sciences

What You'll Do

The ability to communicate in Spanish has become increasingly important in the twenty-first century. As a Spanish Education major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll take courses that will expand your mastery of the Spanish language as well as courses that prepare you for a career as an educator.

You’ll gain expertise in Spanish through proficiency-based instruction that emphasizes the spoken language and the development of your writing. You’ll also gain the knowledge and skills necessary for a teaching career. Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned a reputation for excellence in teacher preparation and offers an outstanding student teaching program.

All IUP Spanish majors are required to participate in a study abroad experience lasting a minimum of four weeks. Prospective employers will want to know about the types of international experiences you have had. IUP students may take advantage of one of three Spanish Department programs in Spain, Mexico, or Costa Rica. Students may also choose to participate in other, non-IUP programs or exchanges.

What You'll Become

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Spanish Education will prepare you for a career as a Spanish teacher for kindergarten through twelfth grade. As a teacher, you’ll experience the satisfaction that comes from instilling knowledge in young minds. You’ll give your students a valuable skill they can take with them into the future.

Employment of teachers is expected to grow by 12 percent between 2006 and 2016, although some areas of the country will experience more growth than others. This is expected to create 479,000 additional teacher positions, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
