The president of IUP’s Student Government Association, Alyssa Stiles believes in taking chances. The pre-dentistry major is also the founder of IUP’s Athena Club, a service organization.

Having a positive experience with Athena Club in high school, Alyssa thought it was important to bring the club to IUP and was able to do so after receiving a Women’s Leadership Award that included a small grant.

“It’s essentially a women’s leadership club, but I hesitate to say that, because it’s open to men, too. The club has participated in several activities to promote awareness of women’s issues and to develop leadership skills,” Alyssa explained. The group has been involved in efforts such as breast cancer awareness events and participating in the Indiana community’s Leaders Circle event. Alyssa herself attended Athena International’s leadership summit in Chicago.

As president of the Student Government Association, Alyssa has employed the leadership skills she gained from her involvement in Athena Club.

“SGA gives students a voice and represents the undergraduate student population of IUP,” she said. “Student representation is extremely important, because it gives us a voice. We can’t simply sit back and be apathetic. We need to do something about things that affect us.”

Also a member of a sorority, Alyssa said, “IUP is full of great opportunities. There are so many organizations to join, scholarships to apply for events and activities to watch and participate in, and people to meet.”

While she is best known on campus for her community service pursuits, Alyssa doesn’t take her academic experience lightly. For example, to participate in the Undergraduate Scholars Forum, she completed a project that entailed visiting local elementary schools to teach fourth graders about the importance of dental hygiene.

“If you take chances and make the most of your time at IUP, you’ll never regret it.”
