What You'll Do

While computers can be invaluable for their capacity to share information, not all information is meant to be shared. Society is increasingly concerned with information security—a career field for which you can prepare as a Computer Science major pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree in the Information Assurance track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

All Computer Science students take virtually the same freshman courses. As you follow the Information Assurance Track, you will be required to take a minor in Criminology. Graduates typically work with law enforcement personnel or in security areas and need to understand law enforcement.

At IUP, your education will closely follow the recommendations of the Association for Computing Machinery, the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society. IUP professors constantly update the curriculum to keep pace with changes in the industry.

What You'll Become

The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science achieved in pursuit of the Information Assurance track prepares students for jobs such as network administrator, information security specialist, or network security manager.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of network and computer systems administrators is expected to increase by 27 percent from 2006 to 2016, which is much faster than the average for all job categories. Employment of computer and information systems managers is also expected to grow more quickly than average at 16 percent, according to the report.

Through that decade, the report predicts a high demand for managers with expertise in computer security issues, while the computer system design (and related services) industry will continue to be one of the fastest-growing industries in the country’s economy.
