What You'll Do
When calculating the right education, you must factor in a respected university, knowledgeable faculty, and an excellent program designed to develop your mathematical expertise. At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Mathematics majors find the solution. IUP can offer you everything you need to prepare for a successful career or graduate work in mathematics.
Under the guidance of IUP’s Mathematics faculty, you’ll take classes such as Calculus II, Probability and Statistics for Natural Sciences, Differential Equations, and Introduction to Mathematical Proofs. As part of your major, you’ll also choose from a list of mathematics courses and take a few classes in computer science.
Free electives offered by this major give you the opportunity to explore another field by adding a minor. Some of the minors offered by IUP include Business Administration for nonmajors, Computer Science, Sociology/Applied Social Research, Information Assurance (Criminology/Computer Science), Political Science, Anthropology, Dance, and Theater.
What You'll Become
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree will prepare you for graduate studies in Mathematics or for a professional career in fields such as financial forecasting, space systems, transportation, cryptography, construction, computer systems, medicine, robotics, economics, statistical analysis, government, industry, or management science.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of biostatistics should see job growth, primarily in the field of pharmaceuticals research and clinical trials. The report, which looks at the decade 2006-2016, also notes that the insurance industry, the largest employer of actuaries, is expected to see stable job growth, while other areas, such as health care and consulting agencies, may see larger growth in mathematics employment figures. Mathematicians with strong computer skills may find additional job opportunities.
