Staying focused on a goal is a key element of academic success, but many find it wise to leave a few options open. As a Chemistry major pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in the Pre-Medical track, you’ll receive the comprehensive education you’ll need to prepare for medical school while keeping open your option to pursue graduate education.
The Pre-Medical track adds a sequence of primarily Biology courses to the main curriculum for a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, allowing you to satisfy the requirements for both medical schools and graduate schools. IUP’s Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society.
IUP’s Chemistry faculty, nineteen full-time, doctorally trained faculty members, has expertise in a wide range of chemical specialties. Unlike many other schools, IUP encourages you to be active in research starting in your freshman year.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment outlook for physicians and surgeons is good, with job openings expected to grow 14 percent from 2006 to 2016. Promising areas for doctors are specialties such as family practice, internal medicine, and obstetrics/gynecology. The growing and aging population will push demand for medical services. The job market is particularly good in rural and low-income areas.
Areas that may see job growth in chemistry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, are pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, environmental research, and in smaller, specialized, scientific services firms (as manufacturers continue to outsource research and testing).
