Economists think through choices, analyzing costs, benefits, and alternatives. Applying that kind of scrutiny to choosing a university will bring you to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. As an Economics major at IUP, you’ll receive a comprehensive education that will prepare you for graduate school or a professional career.
In addition to advanced theory courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics, you’ll take a wide range of classes covering many aspects of your major. Among the courses you may take are Monetary Economics, Labor Economics, Managerial Economics, Economics of Crime, Public Finance, Economics of Sports, and Economics of Tourism.
Free electives in this major give you the flexibility to add a double major, a minor, or an internship. Some areas you may want to consider are Business Administration, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, and Political Science.
What You’ll Become
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics will prepare you for graduate school or for a career in economic analysis for the media, government, financial markets, special interest groups, or industry. Economics graduates have also pursued careers in management, finance, labor relations, banking, and law.
According to a report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics covering the 2006-2016 decade, 52 percent of economists are employed in government jobs in various agencies. The report notes that the expanding global economy is expected to increase job opportunities somewhat for those skilled in economic analysis and forecasting, although the job market will be competitive. The labor study also predicts that some businesses may choose consultants rather than hire staff economists.
