What You'll Do

Seeing art through the eyes of a historian is like being in the room with the artist, understanding the culture, the pressures in the artist’s life, the popular techniques of that time, and how these factors impacted the artist’s work. Sometimes it’s not about how the world influenced art but rather about how art influenced the world.  For example, artists gave us portraits of historical figures we would not otherwise be able to visualize.

As an Art major taking the History track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll gain a solid foundation in the history of art, from ancient through modern times.

Through this major, you’ll develop critical thinking, research, and writing skills. You’ll also learn terminology, methodology, and professional approaches to historical inquiry.  You’ll put this knowledge to work as you conduct art history research through independent investigations.

With this major, you can choose to take a Minor in Art Studio to further explore the various studio disciplines, including ceramics, drawing, fibers, graphic design, metals, painting, print media, sculpture, and woodworking.

What You'll Become

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Art with a History track prepares students for graduate study leading to careers in museums, galleries, fine art libraries, visual resources, teaching, and research. IUP’s Department of Art offers both the Master of Arts degree and the Master of Fine Arts degree.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market through the year 2016 for archivists who specialize in electronic records and records management is expected to grow faster than for those who specialize in older media formats.
