Carl Hisiro ’76

Carl HisiroCarl Hisiro graduated from IUP in 1976 with degrees in Economics and Political Science and went on to earn his law degree in 1979 from Duquesne University. While he spends his days working for the State of Pennsylvania as an assistant counsel at the Public Utility Commission, his passion is sports memorabilia. In the early ’90s, Carl used his passion to create the Harrisburg Sports Card Show—a fundraiser that has since netted more than $120,000 for IUP.

With the help of other IUP alumni volunteers, the show has grown significantly since 1992 and is now held each year at the Harrisburg Mall. Sports enthusiasts attend the show to buy autographed photos, sports cards, and other memorabilia from any of the 80 vendors. Guests can also have items autographed by one of the athletes attending the show. This year’s show included Steelers greats Santonio Holmes and James Harrison, as well as Heisman Trophy winners and retired NFL stars Paul Hornung and John Cappelletti.

You volunteer your time to IUP to organize and promote the Harrisburg Card Show. What inspired you to give your time?

In the early nineties, the Harrisburg alumni chapter wanted to raise money for IUP scholarship support. As a hobby, I was very active in sports cards and memorabilia and saw its potential to raise large amounts of money for IUP. I developed the concept and became the show's promoter. We held the first show and auction at an area hotel in 1992 and raised $5,000. Our last show in February 2009 broke our record when we donated $25,000 to the IUP scholarship fund to benefit Harrisburg-area students attending IUP.

How much time in a year do you give to IUP?

The sports card show takes a great deal of my free time, especially from October through March. I spend approximately 350 to 400 hours each year working out the details and logistics for the show. I probably spend another twenty to thirty hours on other alumni activities and helping the Admissions office with recruiting.

What would you tell other alumni about this experience?

While it takes a lot of hard work, I take great pride in knowing that our efforts benefit the university. I really enjoy my work as the promoter for the card show. It’s allowed me to meet a lot of great people and network with many members of the IUP alumni community.

Is there some favorite moment or some inspiration that you have from organizing the Harrisburg Card Show?

I enjoy presenting an ever-increasing scholarship amount to a deserving Harrisburg-area student each year. In addition, I take pride in knowing that our endowment fund will continue to benefit IUP and its students even after we stop doing our shows.
