B.S.Ed.,
English Education
College of Humanities and Social Sciences
What You’ll Do
As an English education major, you will participate in a challenging major that prepares students to teach English at the secondary level. Candidates take a variety of classes, including liberal studies courses, major-required courses, and professional education courses designed to foster the development of content and pedagogical knowledge. Students also learn about teaching special-needs students and English-language learners, enabling them to effectively meet the diverse needs of the students they may have in their classrooms.
Field experiences are integral to this major as well. Early on in the program, students visit secondary classrooms, observing teaching and learning as pre-service teachers, which helps to build an awareness and understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of English teachers. The B.S. in English Education course of study culminates with student teaching. Candidates spend fifteen weeks student teaching, at which time they hone their teaching skills as they experience the realities of teaching English.
What You’ll Become
The English Education major at IUP will certify you to teach secondary English in Pennsylvania and at least forty-five other states. IUP’s English Education Program has a reputation for producing excellent teachers; graduates are often recruited by school districts throughout Pennsylvania and neighboring states. As a secondary English teacher, you will help your students understand and appreciate literature and writing and to communicate effectively so that their lives will be empowered both in and out of the classroom.
