Special Notice
The Pennsylvania Department of Education is changing the structure of teacher certification. IUP is responding by also revising how we offer certain majors that lead to teaching certification. Please note that what you read below may not in its entirety reflect the experience you might receive in this program.
What You’ll Do
Elementary school teachers set the foundation for learning. They teach kindergartners to read, second-graders to spell, and fifth-graders to solve math problems. As an Elementary Education major taking the Urban Track at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll prepare for a teaching career in city schools, some of which may be low-income districts with high minority enrollments.
At IUP, you’ll gain knowledge and insight that will help you become sensitive to the backgrounds and life experiences of urban students—elements that may be quite different from what you’re used to. You’ll also gain hands-on experience in a city school setting while taking part in IUP’s extensive student teaching program.
Among the many topics you’ll cover in your IUP classes are school law, teaching in urban centers, educational psychology, the education of students with disabilities, teaching math, teaching art, reading for the elementary school, and pedagogy.
Elementary school teachers face a lot of challenges. At IUP, you’ll learn how to meet those challenges successfully and lead a classroom with confidence. Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned a reputation for outstanding teacher education.
