B.S.Ed., Art Education

College of Fine Arts

What You’ll Do

Artists create their works of art using both skill and an inner sense of expression. As an Art Education major at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you’ll gain the skills you’ll need for a career as an art teacher while you explore avenues for artistic expression.

Through IUP’s art programs, you’ll explore a variety of areas of study, including ceramics, drawing, fibers, graphic design, metals, painting, print media, sculpture, and woodworking.

Through IUP’s teacher education courses, you’ll gain an excellent foundation for your career and take part in IUP’s outstanding student teaching program. As an Art Education major, you will also take art classes covering history, criticism, aesthetics, and culture.

You may choose to add a Minor in Art Studio to your degree. This option provides further exploration in the various studio disciplines.

What You’ll Become

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a major in Art Education is a professional degree program leading to certification to teach K–12 art in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As an art teacher, you will share your knowledge and inspire your students to tap their creative potential. Most students enjoy learning in this area, which adds to the job satisfaction of art educators.

Employment of teachers is expected to grow nationally by 12 percent between 2006 and 2016, although some areas of the country are expected to do better than others. This is expected to create 479,000 additional teacher positions nationally, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
