Nick Lenio, a Music Education major, has gained knowledge on playing every major instrument for orchestra or concert band. He also plays in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble. But being the executive drum major for the IUP Marching Band is his biggest kick.

“I’ve grown so much here. Since the IUP Marching Band is student run, it requires the students in leadership positions to step up and take charge.”

Keeping more than two hundred musicians in the marching band in step, in synch, and in time is a challenge. IUP’s executive drum major Nick Lenio makes it look easy. And fun. The Music Education major from Hughesville, Pa., takes the leadership position in stride.

“Leading the marching band has been almost surreal for me,” Nick said. “When I came here as a freshman, marching band was my first experience. I have grown so much since arriving here, and very much of that is because of my responsibilities as drum major. Since the IUP Marching Band is very much student run, it requires the students in leadership positions to step up and take charge. I have grown in this position as an educator and as a person.”

In addition to leading the band with his fellow drum majors and section leaders, Nick also performs in the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble. While the trombone was the first instrument he picked up, he also concentrates on guitar. As part of his major, he has acquired knowledge on playing every major instrument for orchestra or concert band. In the summer, he worked with the IUP Drum Major Academy, teaching his craft to high school drum majors. And, he says he has benefited from participating in music organizations such as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, a music fraternity.

“I have had more personal relationships with professors than I expected. I thought I would be coming to this big university with hundreds of kids in each class but soon discovered otherwise. These relationships encourage academic and personal growth by making the students feel like they’re more than just another face in the classroom,” Nick said. “I have moved from a nervous freshman not sure of what was to come to someone who is helping underclassmen find their place in the university.”
