To refer to Robert E. Cook Honors College student Beth Paladin as an aspiring pharmacologist is an understatement. The Chemistry major already is doing the research.

The senior from Penn Hills, Pa., has been involved in an independent study with her professor since her freshman year. The project focuses on polymorphism in organic molecules, a topic that greatly interests pharmaceutical companies, because it affects the rate of drug absorption in humans.

Beth’s complete absorption by research and her fascination with science, in general, led her to apply for and receive the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Only three hundred sophomores and juniors in the nation receive the Goldwater Scholarship each year. “My application for this award was made feasible by the encouragement and dedication of several professors,” she said.

“It’s not just the fact that, here, you can compete for national awards and scholarships or collaborate on serious, real-world research projects even as an undergraduate student—it’s the people you meet,” Beth said. “I remember walking down the hall one day with my cello. A music professor, someone I had never interacted with, who was walking by stopped to ask me how long I’d been playing and if I’d like to play with the cello choir. The next thing I know, I’m attending a rehearsal. I’ve enjoyed being part of that choir ever since. For me, it’s the kind of experience that sums up IUP.”
