Homecoming Parade

The 2013 Homecoming Parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, at Eleventh and Philadelphia streets.

From Eleventh and Philadelphia streets, the parade will travel east to Sixth and Philadelphia streets, south on Sixth Street to Church Street, west on Church Street to Oakland Avenue, and southwest on Oakland Avenue to Eleventh Street. The Homecoming parade route will continue to include the IUP Oak Grove as a spectator area. The route will continue southwest on Oakland Avenue to Eleventh Street, where the parade will disband. All motor-driven floats will continue southwest on Oakland Avenue to the Robertshaw building for disassembly.

The parade will feature nearly 70 campus and community units. IUP’s Department of Military Science howitzer cannon, which will be located near the Indiana County Courthouse, will fire to signal the start of the parade. The 2013 parade theme is “Countries Around the World.”

Highlights from the ’12 Parade:

Grand marshals for the 2012 Homecoming parade included Terry Bunton, Louise (Bollman) Kinter, and Kathryn (Rend) Armstrong.

Eight marching bands participated in the parade from the following schools: IUP, Blairsville High School, Indiana Area Senior High School, Marion Center High School, Penns Manor Junior-Senior High School, Purchase Line High School, Saltsburg High School, and United High School.

Floats for last year’s parade included “Spiderman” by Theta Phi Alpha, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Sigma Phi, Sigma Phi, and Delta Phi Epsilon; “Peanuts” by Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, Phi Delta Theta, and Kappa Sigma; “Superman” by Delta Gamma, Phi Kappa Tau, Sigma Sigma, Sigma, and Pi Lambda Phi; “Batman” by Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Delta Tau Sigma, and Phi Kappa Psi; and “Calvin & Hobbes” by Alpha Sigma Tau, Alpha Xi Delta, Gamma Sigma Sigma, and Sigma Chi.

IUP’s 2012 Crimson Court members included Sarah Stone, Meghan Sullivan, Ashley Carmo, Gabrielle Lehigh, Megan E. Kahle, Jovana Ramos, and Allia Scott.

Judges for the float competition were Nancy Jones, representing Indiana Borough Council; Sherry Renosky, representing the Indiana Mall; Michael Campbell, IUP student representative; and Michael Hood, dean of the College of Fine Arts.

The first-place float award of $1,000 was sponsored by the IUP Alumni Association, second place by the Indiana Mall Association ($900), third place by the Co-op Store ($800), fourth place also by the Co-Op Store ($700), and fifth place by the IUP Division for University Advancement ($600).
