Graduate Criminology ClassEncouraging intellectual excellence, research, and scholarship. Providing in-depth study in each student’s specialized field. Stimulating continued cultural and intellectual growth. Those qualities are key to the educational experience offered through the graduate studies program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Providing graduate education since 1957, IUP offers nearly fifty master’s degree programs, eight doctoral programs, and numerous certificate programs to its more than sixteen hundred graduate students. Programs are primarily professional, with an emphasis on business, education, public policy studies, human services, social sciences, and applied science and technology, while allowing for distinctive, theoretical programs in the arts and sciences.

IUP is the only public university in Pennsylvania classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a Doctoral/Research University—Intensive institution, a classification based on the number of doctoral degrees a university awards and the number of disciplines in which they are offered. IUP is also a member of the Council of Graduate Schools, the Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools, and the Pennsylvania Association of Graduate Schools.

Known for quality education at an affordable cost, IUP’s graduate studies program allows students to study on a part-time or full-time basis, taking daytime or evening courses. Students work closely with faculty members who have earned national and international reputations in their areas of expertise while remaining committed to teaching. And students have several opportunities to present their work at conferences, symposia, and exhibits.

In addition, our graduate students have access to specialized research and training opportunities through more than forty-five centers and institutes created and managed by faculty members. Among those centers is the Applied Research Lab, which assists with the design and conducting of research projects.

The School of Graduate Studies and Research at IUP provides resources—including the development of external funding—to facilitate the research and advance the scholarship of graduate students and faculty members. Graduate students may apply for up to $500 in research funds through two annual competitions. And throughout their graduate education, they may apply for travel funds to present their scholarly work at professional and academic conferences. The school also offers a series of workshops to graduate students on topics including how to get published, the thesis/dissertation process, protecting human subjects in research, and grant writing.
