Jeffrey Shockey is the director of Corporate Health and Safety for Alcoa, Inc., which serves worldwide markets in aerospace, automotive, packaging, building and construction, commercial transportation, and industry.

A 1980 IUP alumnus, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Safety Management and has served the past twenty-nine years in environmental, health, and safety roles at Alcoa, having worked in corporate and line-management positions.

Shockey began his career at Alcoa in 1980, serving as a site safety engineer at Alcoa Technical Center, the company’s research and development center, near Pittsburgh. From there, his responsibilities within the company continued to increase. He worked at Alcoa’s Pt. Comfort, Texas, facility—which includes an alumina refinery and chemicals plant—and served as a corporate staff safety engineer in Pittsburgh, where he provided technical services to company locations worldwide.

He was named Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) manager at Alcoa Technical Center in 1990 and, two years later, became corporate manager for Alcoa Safety and Health Compliance and Audit Services. In 1996, he relocated to Brentwood, Tenn., to serve as corporate EHS director for Alcoa Fujikura, Ltd., a joint venture with Fujikura Ltd. of Japan. In this position, he had overall responsibility for environmental, health, and safety activities at Alcoa Fujikura’s thirty-four locations in fifteen countries.

He was later named location manager of AFL Wire Products, a $100-million business based in Nashville that manufactured wire, cables, and tubing and provided logistical services. Shockey returned to Pittsburgh in 2001 as director of Safety and Regional Services, which provides shared safety services to Alcoa’s North American locations. In that role, he managed the North American regional EHS services staff.

He was promoted to Corporate Safety director in January 2007 and corporate director, Corporate Health and Safety, in May 2009. In his current position, he is responsible for developing strategies to improve the company’s global health and safety performance and its drive to zero injuries. He also focuses on fatality prevention worldwide for both employees and contractors.

A recipient of the IUP Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008, Shockey serves on the advisory board of IUP’s Department of Safety Sciences and for Rand’s Center for Health and Safety in the Workplace. A professional member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, he is a board certified safety professional in comprehensive practice.

Shockey has been active as a youth coach for the YMCA and several community-based youth football programs. He is a member of Alcoa’s 25-Year Club and of the Sons of the American Revolution and is a member and elder of the Slate Lick Presbyterian Church.

Born in Meyersdale, Pa., Shockey now lives in Freeport. He and his wife, Debra, have two children, both of whom attend IUP. Jamie Lee is a junior, and Austin is a freshman.
