A Transforming Experience

Meet other IUP people...

Meredith Giantsos looking rightLearning. Reflecting. Collaborating on projects that can make a difference in the lives of others. Expanding your intellectual horizons. Pursuing interests you’ve always been passionate about and exploring new ones. Embracing new experiences and new friendships. Developing leadership skills. Creating memories. Creating new possibilities—for yourself, for the world around you. Discovering who you really are. Transforming into who you want to be. That’s you. That’s the university you seek. That’s IUP.

“The professional and personal transformations that the average student experiences at IUP are nothing short of amazing,” said Meredith Giantsos, a native of Toledo, Ohio. “From facilities, like new computers in the labs, new residence halls, the library, to faculty members who never ever make you feel like just another number and truly care about your success, to endless opportunities, everything about IUP is designed to transform you into a more successful professional in your field, a more effective leader, and someone who can make a difference in the world.”

Meredith Giantsos with booksMeredith, currently pursuing a major in Journalism and a minor in Communications Media at IUP, had always wanted to attend a mid-sized university at an out-of-state location. “I couldn’t help but fall in love with IUP on my visit,” she said. “I really liked the size—fourteen thousand undergraduate students—and the beauty of the campus, especially the Oak Grove. I liked how the community was welcoming and close-knit, yet highly diverse. I liked the location—the small-town feel of Indiana within an easy drive of the big-city opportunities of Pittsburgh. And I also liked how IUP tailored its tuition to the neighboring out-of-state students.

“As a freshman, I worried about how successful I would be at IUP,” continued Meredith. “This is a place that’s big on options, and it can sometimes be overwhelming when you are completely surrounded by possibilities. But IUP not only challenges you in different ways, it also supports you as you try different things. The professors, for example, are some of the best in their fields, but instead of being intimidating, they are incredibly approachable. It’s really easy to interact with them, they remember you by name, and they truly care about your success.”

Meredith soon found herself involved in dozens of different activities—from playing leadership roles in different professional, Greek, and honorary student organizations, to traveling abroad to Valladolid, Spain, to helping construct the parade floats for one of the most exciting weekends on the academic calendar—Homecoming. She was voted Most Outstanding New Member in the Greek Community, Spring ’05; Outstanding Chapter President, Spring ’06; as well as Homecoming Queen Court, Fall ’06. And along the way, she remained focused on academics, achieving inclusion on the Dean’s List several times, as well as receiving the National Collegiate Communications Arts Award in Spring ’05.

“I will always value the education I have received at IUP,” said Meredith. “But the IUP experience goes beyond merely learning or preparing for a successful career. It’s about amazing experiences and insights and relationships coming together to transform you into a better person.”

  • Were it not for IUP, I would never be the person I am today. I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished here and know that the faculty and the staff, the opportunities, and the memories this university offered me were an integral part of my success.
