An Education of Value

Meet other IUP people...

Michael Appolonia portraitA university with a rich history of achievements. An education of depth and breadth that challenges you beyond your expectations. Small class sizes. A highly qualified faculty that is passionate about teaching. A beautiful campus. A location ideal for a life of the mind. A community small enough for you to run into a friend anywhere you go, yet big enough to meet someone new every day. An experience that prepares you for a successful career as well as a meaningful life. There are many ways to measure the value of a great education. And IUP succeeds on all counts.

“Value,” said Criminology major Michael Appolonia. “It’s the one word that constantly comes to mind when I think of IUP. My experience here has challenged me beyond my expectations and allowed me to succeed in ways I could never have imagined.”

Raised in Indiana, Pa., Michael is the kind of ambitious, engaged, and service-minded student every school loves to claim. He is an active member of several student clubs and organizations, including Sigma Chi fraternity, Gamma Sigma Alpha National Greek Academic Honor Society, and Order of Omega Honor Society. He has been an intern with Concurrent Technologies Corporation. He is an athlete as well as an assistant coach for the Indiana Area Senior High School varsity hockey team. And his healthy GPA is proof that, despite all the extracurricular activities he is involved in, he remains serious about his academics.Michael Appolonia in Oak Grove

“Both my parents are IUP graduates,” said Michael. “The success they’ve achieved with their IUP degrees and the fact that I wouldn’t have to travel far from home were both important reasons for my choosing IUP. I also really enjoy living in Indiana—it’s a small, friendly town where you can walk just about anywhere, yet it is really close to all the big-city opportunities Pittsburgh offers.

“Given my experience so far, I’m convinced IUP is preparing me for a successful career and future of my own. IUP has an outstanding criminology program, and I’ve enjoyed every single class I’ve taken. I’ve been able to really interact one-on-one with my professors, even though many of them are leading figures in their fields whose names keep coming up when I do research. And I have been very impressed with all the facilities that IUP offers.

“I also really enjoy the sense of community I find on this campus,” continued Michael. “It’s easy to get involved—there are over two hundred student organizations on campus! The life experiences I’ve had here have taught me so much—to know exactly how productive I can be, to enjoy myself even while I keep my grades where I want them to be, to give back through community service. I’ve made amazing new friends and built some great relationships with staff and faculty. I know that, in addition to great memories, I’ll have plenty of different people to approach for reference letters once I graduate.”

  • I’ve noticed that, here, the more I push myself, the more I get in return. I would definitely recommend IUP to anyone looking for a great total college experience.
