Adjusting to College Life

As your son or daughter steps beyond the comforts of home and family to begin a new, exciting chapter of life at IUP, you would like to ensure he or she is not overwhelmed by the seeming whirlwinds of change.

Three students play a board game in a lounge within their suite.

That is why we offer so many ways to help students transition to college life.

Getting Oriented

Even before they officially start their first semester at IUP, students can get acquainted with the campus through orientation programs.

Your child will be invited to attend either a Robert E. Cook Honors College, Fall Indiana, or Regional Campus orientation. Each is a two-day session designed to make students comfortable in their new surroundings.

You’re welcome to come along, too. We have parent and guardian orientations that run simultaneously with the student orientations.

Finding Guidance

Our Student Affairs offices have a wealth of information about all aspects of student life. Students can visit the office on the website or in person.

Students can find answers to questions about residence halls, on-campus dining services, financial aid, tutoring, career exploration, laundry facilities, psychological counseling, campus computing, clubs, and much more.

And the office’s IUP Living section has tip sheets for students and parents, such as “Things I Wish I Knew Before,” “Tips for College Success,” “Study and Safety Tips,” and “A Parent’s Pocket Guide.”

Choosing a Path

In addition, our Major and Career Exploration Center has career counselors and trained peer advisors to help students who aren’t yet sure which direction they want their studies to take. Throughout the year, faculty members are there to mentor and encourage students to achieve their potential.

At IUP, we recognize that, as parents, you can’t help but worry about the students in your family as they embark on this new journey. That’s why we do everything we can to help them settle in and feel at home.
