Florence Mauchant M'85

Florence Mauchant M'85When Florence Mauchant came to IUP in 1984 on an exchange program through the Institut Commercial de Nancy (ICN) in Nancy, France, she had a very limited knowledge of IUP.

“I remember it being presented as a very good teachers’ college,” Ms. Mauchant recalled. “With the benefit of hindsight, I consider myself to have been extremely lucky to have ended up at IUP, as the university community, as well as the community of Indiana at large, was so fundamentally welcoming toward all, and especially international students, and truly fostered a nurturing environment prone to learning.”

Since Ms. Mauchant was at IUP on an exchange scholarship, her only funds came from a “French franc-funded loan, which was rapidly dwindling because of the extremely unfavorable exchange rate at that time between the dollar and the franc,” so she needed to find a way to make some money while in Indiana.

“I was in dire needs of a paying job, and Renee Liscinsky, who later became a very close and dear friend, and June Phillips were instrumental in making sure I would be employed in a very rewarding task: assisting in the teaching of the French conversational class, which was a real treat,” Ms. Mauchant said. She also participated in the writing of a French textbook coauthored by Dr. Phillips, Départ-Arrivée.

After receiving a graduate degree from ICN in 1984 and her Master of Business Administration degree in 1985 from IUP, Ms. Mauchant moved to New York City and started working as a credit analyst for BNP (Banque Nationale de Paris) and then with Generale Bank. She then joined a newly launched publishing company and became the director of marketing and development at NCM Communications. She assisted with the launch of a new Paris-based financial daily, Le Temps de la Finance, before moving back to New York City to serve as a vice president for Generale Bank (now Fortis), the largest Belgian bank, where she directed a marketing program to Fortune 500 and European clients and supervised a loan portfolio of approximately $2 billion.

In 2000, Ms. Mauchant became managing director of HT Capital Advisors, LLC, where she remains today, serving as a managing director of investment banking and as founder and president of HT Asset Management, LLC. In addition to taking part in the management of the firm, she heads up the firm’s asset management activity and has overall responsibility for all cross-border new business activity.

She also teaches financial-literacy courses to underprivileged Manhattan-based middle and high school students through the Muriel Siebert Foundation curriculum, a program created by stockbroker Muriel Siebert to help young people learn how to be financially stable. Ms. Mauchant is also a board member of the French American Chamber of Commerce in New York and, within the organization, heads a Women in Business task force with a mission to foster opportunities for professional women in the French American community at large. Ms. Mauchant served on the Board of Trustees at the Lycée Français de New York, a nonprofit, K-12 private school, for 10 years until the fall of 2011 and received the Palmes Académiques, a distinction granted by the French government for services related to educational and cultural contributions.

Because of the limited amount of relaxation time available in her hectic schedule, Ms. Mauchant said she has become an “adept practitioner of three-minute meditation times, as well as fully enjoying special moments like the trip to IUP for the Distinguished Alumni ceremony.”

Ms. Mauchant is the daughter of M. and Mme Jean Mauchant, of Vaires sur Marne, France, and the mother of 18-year-old Emilie Lomas.
