Special Requirements for Specific Majors

Loading...

Several of our majors have special admissions requirements beyond the basic application. These include Dietetics, Education, Fine Arts, Nursing, and Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.

Also see Special Admission Requirements for Transfer Students.

Dietetics

Students interested in dietetics must meet minimum requirements for admission into the program. Students who do not meet these requirements but who are eligible for admission will be admitted into the Nutrition major.

Education

Due to the structured nature of the programs and the requirements set by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for teacher certification, students applying to the following majors must comply with stricter requirements for program admission:

  • Early Childhood (PreK–Grade 4)/Special Education (K–Grade 8)
  • Middle-Level Education (Grades 4–8)/English and Language Arts
  • Middle-Level Education (Grades 4–8)/Mathematics
  • Undeclared Teacher Education

If students are not eligible for admission to a major, but still meet eligibility for university admission, they will be notified of what options are available for them to choose from before an official admissions decision is made. These admission restrictions do not apply to secondary education majors for freshmen, but do apply for transfer students. Additionally, freshman applicants may be required to submit an essay in order to be considered for admission to one of the majors above after they apply for university admission. The student will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions requesting the essay, if it is necessary.

Nursing

Nursing is our most competitive major because of size and entry requirements. Students interested in Nursing are encouraged to apply early and may only begin in the Fall term in this major. Because of the restrictions of the program, we cannot guarantee admission into the program for enrolled students wishing to change their major to Nursing. In order to be considered for Nursing, students must have earned competitive scores on the SAT or ACT and have earned at least a B average in high school coursework.

Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

All students interested in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology should submit the application prior to December 15. Applicants who meet initial academic requirements will be evaluated by the Admissions Committee after the December 15 deadline, and students selected for admission will be notified. Students who are not selected, but who meet university admissions requirements, will be notified of what options are available to them before an official admissions decision is made.

Fine Arts

Art

Students who are interested in pursuing any of the art majors at IUP are invited to a Fine Arts Exploration Day after being admitted to the university to learn more about the College of Fine Arts and to submit a portfolio of their work for review by the department. Information about portfolio expectations is posted at the Art Department website.

Music

After admission to the university is granted, students who are interested in majoring in music must attend a Fine Arts Exploration Day, at which they will learn more about the College of Fine Arts and have their audition for the program. See the Music Department website for audition information.

Theater

Those students who wish to study theater at IUP must attend a Fine Arts Exploration Day to either audition (if the student wants to focus on performance) or interview (if the student plans on concentrating on production). Admitted students are invited to these programs. Information about this process can be found on the Theater Department website.
