Megan

Prognosis: Success • That's why she chose IUP Nursing

Megan Spangler, completing her bachelor of science degree in Nursing, wants to first work as registered nurse in a critical care unit. In preparation, she spends a lot of time in clinical settings, something IUP nursing students begin in their sophomore year. She knows the value of this experience.

“As of August 2010, 96 percent of IUP nursing graduates passed the NCLEX on their first attempt!”

If endorsement from other people influences your choices, you are like Megan Spangler.

“I decided to attend IUP for several reasons, including the distance from my home, the excellent experience my sister had in the nursing program, and the affordable cost of tuition,” the Westmoreland County resident said.

When she arrived on campus, Megan learned something that surprised her about IUP’s nursing program.

“The pass rate of new graduates is phenomenal for the state licensure exam. As of August 2010, 96 percent of IUP nursing graduates passed the NCLEX on their first attempt! To me, this exemplifies the excellence and dedication of the nursing faculty to train students for post-graduation licensure and job preparation,” she said.

Megan aspires to eventually become a Certified Nurse Anesthetist a few years after her graduation. From IUP, she will earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and hopes to first work as registered nurse in a critical care unit. In preparation, she spends a great deal of time nursing clinical settings, something IUP nursing students begin during their sophomore year.

Her dedication has rewarded her in the form of a Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation Grant, which recognizes her consistently high grade point average and helps to defray the cost of her education. She also has a work-study job, which helps her with her expenses.

“Unlike some other schools, the tuition for the nursing program is the same as other majors at IUP,” Megan said, “which was ideal financially for me.”
