Ellen Sylves Ruddock is honored as a 2011 Distinguished Alumna for her extraordinary loyalty and dedication to IUP and her tireless efforts to better the lives of the students and citizens of Indiana. As the current director of IUP’s Center for Family Business in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology, she helps business owners, their families, and key employees succeed by providing educational programs and networking opportunities.

Ms. Ruddock grew up in Swissvale. She graduated from IUP with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education in 1966, and soon thereafter became a teacher at Penn Hills High School, near Pittsburgh. In addition to her work as a teacher, she has held positions in sales, fundraising, and consulting. Her successful career includes founding, operating, and eventually selling a successful retail business, as well as operating an award-winning consulting firm.

In addition to her degree from IUP, Ms. Ruddock graduated from the Entrepreneurial Management Program at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business in 1995 and from IUP’s MBA Certificate Program in 2009. She has traveled the globe as a keynote speaker on personal leadership, personal productivity, planning, and goal setting.

Her professional and philanthropic work has garnered her numerous awards, including the Athena Award (1987); Indiana, Pa., Civic Leader of the Year (2001); Outstanding Civilian Service Medal, Department of the Army (1997 and 2001); and IUP President’s Medal of Distinction (2008).

IUP has benefited greatly from Ms. Ruddock’s knowledge and connections. She gives tirelessly of her time to support IUP by attending, organizing, and hosting events both on and off campus. When asked to lead the fundraising efforts of a university capital campaign, Ms. Ruddock and her team members raised almost $31 million. And, during her time as a member of the Alumni Association’s board, Ms. Ruddock was instrumental in leading the strategic planning committee. Her guidance of other IUP initiatives has also been invaluable.

Ms. Ruddock and her husband, Rod, have two grown sons and are the grandparents of four. They reside in Indiana, Pa.
