Donna Micheaux is honored as a 2011 Distinguished Alumna for her extraordinary efforts to educate America’s youth. She currently serves as the chief of schools officer for the Dallas Independent School District, where she provides instructional leadership and directs the operations for the district’s 230 campuses, serving 157,000 students.

Dr. Micheaux earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and Special Education from IUP in 1975. She also holds a master’s degree in Special Education and a doctorate in Educational Administration and Policy Studies, both from the University of Pittsburgh. From 1993 to 1998, Dr. Micheaux served in a variety of positions with the Pittsburgh Public Schools. From teacher to administrator, she developed strategies and implemented comprehensive plans that increased student achievement scores and improved staff performance. In addition to her work with the Pittsburgh Public Schools, her teaching experience also includes working as an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

She joined Pitt’s Institute for Learning in 1998 as a lead district liaison and fellow. There, she advised and provided technical assistance and developed and implemented districtwide instructional improvement plans. While at the institute, she worked closely with the ethnically diverse Saint Paul School District, consisting of approximately 42,000 students speaking more than ninety-five languages. She also worked with the Cleveland Municipal School District, serving more than 70,000 students, and the Prince George’s County Public Schools, serving more than 160,000 students. She played a key role in the development of literacy initiatives for several urban school districts, including Providence, R.I., New York City, and Los Angeles.

Since joining the Dallas Independent School District, Dr. Micheaux has improved student achievement scores, reorganized and rebuilt low-performing high schools, and secured funding from a Dallas foundation to develop a principal’s coaching program. Over the years, she has positively impacted thousands of students, teachers, and colleagues through her research and desire to share her expertise.

Dr. Micheaux and her husband, William, reside in Dallas. They have two children, Meghan and William, and one granddaughter, Arli.
