What You'll Do

While practice is the key to musical performance, the right education is the key to a career as a music teacher. At Indiana University of Pennsylvania, you will grow from a student with a talent for music into a highly qualified music educator.

The department's greatest resource is its faculty. They draw on their experience and expertise to nurture your talent. Our faculty will prepare you to lead large choral and instrumental groups. You will learn to instruct and inspire students, from elementary to high school, in the classroom. You’ll also learn how to play and teach instruments you’ve never before tried.

As an IUP music education major, you’ll take a range of courses such as technology in the music classroom, music theory and fundamentals of conducting. Indiana University of Pennsylvania has earned a reputation for excellence in teacher education and offers an outstanding student teaching program.

What You'll Become

The Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Music Education will prepare you for a career as a music teacher for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Many who graduate with this degree find it rewarding to build their careers around sharing their enjoyment of music. As a teacher in this field, you will use your musical skills each day, inspiring your students to explore their potential.

Employment of school teachers is expected to grow nationally by 12 percent between 2006 and 2016, though some areas of the country are expected to do better than others. This is expected to create 479,000 additional teacher positions nationally, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
