Anthropology Student Discusses Creation of Local Learning Trail in Indiana

The Adventure Learning Trail is more than a collaboration between IUP students and several local agencies. It’s also a tool for teaching people about the rich history of Indiana County and for preserving its stories. Stephanie Raby-Reeger, a dual anthropology/religious studies major from San Jose, California, gave details on the project at the annual IUP Undergraduate Scholars Forum.

Sociology Major Explores Discrimination of Women of Color in the Workplace Based on Hair Style

Of all the things that make it more difficult for a woman of color to land a good job, IUP senior Rebecca Colon has spent the last two years studying aspect one that might go somewhat unnoticed. “The actual issue is race,” she said, “but they’re using hair as the barrier. They’ll say, ‘you may be qualified for this job, but your hair does not meet our grooming policies.’”

Child Development and Family Relations Majors Study Growing Issue of Food Insecurity

Carolyn Kenyon and Ashley Whigham, both of Pittsburgh, and Ashley Tomasko, of Connellsville, shared their research and conclusions to their project, “Food Insecurity: Finding a Solution to a Growing Family Issue” with a 15-minute presentation and question and answer session. The presentation on Food Insecurity was one of more than 150 during the 12th annual, one-day event, which allows IUP undergraduate students to present original research in a wide array of subjects.

Stories from Student Scholars: Studying Genes Involved in Regeneration of Stem Cells [Video]

Biochemistry major Estefania Alba will be presenting at the upcoming Undergraduate Scholars Forum on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. In this video, she discusses the research she is presenting on kidney regeneration. Under the direction of Biology faculty member Cuong Diep, Alba and her fellow researchers use zebrafish as a model system for their research.

Most college students feel stressed when leaving home for college, but a research study conducted by Yong indicates that international students may be feeling increased pressures. Yong’s research was presented last year at the IUP Graduate Scholars Forum, and she is continuing her research this year.
