Inspector: Applying Styles and Formatting Images

One of the biggest changes in the new editor is the Inspector, located via the small arrow in the black box at the upper right of the Workarea.

Locating the Inspector

Paragraph styles in the InspectorTo apply styles such as Introduction or indentation, place your cursor anywhere within the first paragraph, then click the Inspector arrow. A menu will slide out (right). Click on the appropriate style to apply it to the selected text. (The type of options displayed in the Inspector is shown by the Elements title at top. “Element: P” is for paragraphs. “Element: IMG” is for photos and other images.)

Keep in mind that styles cannot be applied to portions of paragraphs, only to entire block of text.

Note: The Inspector menu can be opened before or after selecting the text or image. Remember, though, that an open Inspector menu will lay on top of other windows, such as a library of images. This may block the view of the X in the corner of the other window. In this case, just click the Inspector arrow again to close its menu.

Aligning an Image

The Inspector is also used to align images. After placing the image, click the image once to select it, then click the Inspector arrow to open that menu. (If the styles are still showing, click the image again until the Image elements appear.) See the screencap below for a sample image with the Inspector:

The height and width will automatically be filled in. (Do not change these numbers. Remember that all images must be resized before uploading into Ektron, not from within Ektron.) Edit the title and alt fields so that they describe the image (these descriptions should match). This is required for accessibility reasons—these descriptions will be read aloud by the computer for people who use screen readers.

To align the image, click it once to select it. At the bottom of the Image Elements menu, choose left- or right-aligned image under “Style Selector.”

To change the image from within the Inspector, click it once to select it. From the Image Elements menu, click the Library icon, located under the “src” field (for “source”). Choose the appropriate image from the library window. (As always, only double-click the image filename or the image itself. Do not double-click on the little yellow box.)

The Inspector also shows what styles are being used in the content. When the Inspector menu is open, placing the cursor within the content will show what styles are applied to that piece of content, plus what other styles are also available.
