Within our degree programs, the Department of Art encourages its students to explore a variety of areas of study.

The Department of Art provides more than 13,000 square feet of newly renovated studios for ceramics and sculpture in the university’s Robertshaw building, a converted factory space. Sprowls Hall, a modern, five-story complex, houses fully equipped studios for all other studio areas, including the Center for Turning and Furniture Design.

Ceramics
The ceramics program places an emphasis on the personal growth and individual direction of each student.
Drawing
The drawing program centers on an in-depth exploration in various drawing techniques.
Fibers
Students gain working knowledge in loom weaving and related fabric areas.
Graphic Design
Students in the Graphic Design area are challenged to develop original, high-quality solutions to design problems.
Jewelry and Metals
The program emphasizes the creation of functional and non-functional pieces of art.
Painting
Students investigate new ideas focusing on individual style to find expressive and creative ground.
Print Media
Students learn techniques such as work in relief, intaglio, lithograph, and serigraph printing.
Sculpture
The sculpture program works to approach students individually and provide them with the technical instruction and conceptual guidance necessary to support their artistic development.
Woodworking
The department’s Center for Turning and Furniture Design is the nation’s first university program to integrate turning and furniture design with a studio emphasis.
