Academic Policies

Being aware of IUP’s academic policies will help you make the most of your experience.

Audit Policy
Students who audit courses have the opportunity to attend classes, but will not receive a grade or credit for the course.

D-F Repeat
Please see the Undergraduate Catalog to review the Course Repeat Policy for D and F grades.
Excess Credits
Undergraduate and graduate students wishing to enroll in additional credits must obtain approval from the college dean.
The final examination week is part of the regular academic program and must be incorporated into each instructor’s course plan for the semester.
Grade Appeal Policy
The Grade Appeal Policy provides a mechanism for grade review under conditions associated specifically with discrimination or with capricious evaluation.
The Pass/Fail Policy gives undergraduate students the option of taking a course for credit but without quality points.
Pre-approved Coursework
Students enrolled at IUP who wish to take coursework at another institution (either during the summer or regular semesters) must complete the proper application prior to taking the course(s).

Readmission Procedures
The readmission deadline is one week prior to the start of the semester in which you are applying for readmission.

Visiting Student Program
To facilitate undergraduate student enrollment at institutions of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education to take advantage of courses available across the System.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) affords students certain rights with respect to their education records.
Changing Your Major
Please see the Undergraduate Catalog for change of major guidelines.
Student Record Release Authorization
A student can designate individuals or entities to whom their educational record information can be released.
Course Scheduling Preference for Veterans
This policy complies with PA Act 46 and defines the requirements for veteran students and others to receive course scheduling preference under Act 46.
Credit Hour
Definition of academic credit hour as defined by the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education and the federal government.
